Groundwater near Nashik's Kumbh Mela site shows severe toxic contamination, with hexavalent chromium levels over 1,000 times the safety limit, according to the South Asia Network on Dams, Rivers and People. This contamination is causing health issues like skin problems among residents and is flowing into the Godavari river. The affected area includes ghats where the Kumbh Mela will be held, posing a significant health risk to millions of pilgrims. The source of the toxin is suspected to be local industries, and regulatory responses have been deemed inadequate.

South Asia Network on Dams, Rivers and People के अनुसार, नासिक के कुंभ मेला स्थल के पास भूजल में हेक्सावेलेंट क्रोमियम का स्तर सुरक्षा सीमा से 1,000 गुना से ज़्यादा पाया गया है, जो गंभीर ज़हरीले प्रदूषण को दर्शाता है। इस प्रदूषण से लोगों में त्वचा संबंधी बीमारियाँ जैसी स्वास्थ्य समस्याएँ हो रही हैं और यह गोदावरी नदी में भी मिल रहा है। प्रभावित क्षेत्र में वे घाट भी शामिल हैं जहाँ कुंभ मेला आयोजित होगा, जिससे लाखों श्रद्धालुओं के लिए एक बड़ा स्वास्थ्य जोखिम पैदा हो गया है। ज़हरीले पदार्थ का स्रोत स्थानीय उद्योगों को माना जा रहा है, और नियामक प्रतिक्रियाओं को अपर्याप्त बताया गया है।
