Australia's 1860s Garden Plant Becomes Troublesome Rubber Vine Weed
Times of India - India · india
Originally introduced to Australia from Madagascar in the 1860s as a garden ornamental, rubber vine has become one of the country's most invasive weeds. This glossy, trumpet-flowered climber can grow up to 30 metres, smothering native vegetation and forming dense thickets. It also poses risks to people and livestock, hinders cattle mustering, and reduces habitat for native animals. Its spread across vast areas of Queensland, including a 700,000-hectare infestation by 1991, highlights its significant ecological impact.
