PNB Fraud Case: Court Denies Bond Release For Mehul Choksi's Business Head

A special CBI court has rejected a plea by Sunil Bajranglal Varma, former international business head of Mehul Choksi's Gitanjali Group, seeking release on bond in the ₹7,080.86-crore Punjab National Bank fraud case. The court noted Varma only appeared after the Bombay High Court intervened, indicating a lack of voluntary cooperation with the investigation. The CBI had named Varma as an absconding accused in a supplementary chargesheet filed in June 2021. The court stated that Varma would now need to seek regular bail, where his conduct can be considered.

एक विशेष सीबीआई अदालत ने मेहुल चोकसी के गीतांजलि ग्रुप के पूर्व अंतरराष्ट्रीय बिजनेस हेड सुनील बजरंगलाल वर्मा की ₹7,080.86 करोड़ के पंजाब नेशनल बैंक धोखाधड़ी मामले में बॉन्ड पर रिहाई की याचिका खारिज कर दी है। अदालत ने कहा कि वर्मा बॉम्बे हाई कोर्ट के हस्तक्षेप के बाद ही पेश हुए, जो जांच में स्वेच्छा से सहयोग न करने का संकेत देता है। सीबीआई ने जून 2021 में दायर एक पूरक आरोप पत्र में वर्मा को भगोड़ा आरोपी नामित किया था। अदालत ने कहा कि वर्मा को अब नियमित जमानत लेनी होगी, जिसमें उनके आचरण पर विचार किया जाएगा।
