The Department of Food and Public Distribution has raised concerns about ration cards being used to identify families for the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme. While not a formal eligibility criterion, this practice can create operational difficulties and make the document appear compulsory for beneficiaries. The scheme, which offers ₹5 lakh cover per family, originally used the 2011 census for beneficiary identification. Integrating with food security databases in 2022 aimed to simplify identification, but the food department fears it may exclude eligible individuals without ration cards.
