An armed police officer prevented a potential massacre at the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, during Yom Kippur services. The gunman, Sean Ward, approached Constable Jeff Smith, shouting threats before firing a shotgun and hitting the officer multiple times. Despite his injuries, Smith returned fire, and a second officer arrived to assist. Ward later died at a hospital, while Smith is hospitalized with serious injuries. Authorities stated the gunman had the means and intent to cause mass casualties and destroy the synagogue.
