Nepal Himalayas Sees Deadliest Climbing Year Since 2015 With 40 Fatalities

Times of India · world

Nepal's Himalayas and Pakistan's Karakoram have recorded at least 40 deaths of climbers and expedition workers since May, marking 2026 as the deadliest mountaineering year since 2015. Hazardous conditions due to heavy snowfall and changing weather contributed to the fatalities. Risky decisions to continue climbing or remain in exposed camps despite worsening conditions also played a role. Two separate avalanches were responsible for 26 deaths, including 10 on Broad Peak and 16 at Himlung Himal.
