IAF Chief Warns of Fighter Shortage, Seeks Multi-Pronged Approach

Times of India · india

The Indian Air Force (IAF) faces a significant fighter squadron deficit, with 29 squadrons against a sanctioned 42.5. Air Chief Marshal AP Singh stated that the force needs to induct 36 to 40 new aircraft annually to arrest the decline, highlighting delays in Tejas Mark-1A production. The IAF is considering foreign fifth-generation aircraft if the domestic AMCA program faces further setbacks, while aiming to sign a 114-aircraft Multi-Role Fighter deal by March 2027. The force also views drones as complementary to manned aircraft, not requiring a separate command structure.
