Former MLA Simarjit Singh Bains to Challenge 1-Year Sentence in Defamation Case

Former Atam Nagar MLA Simarjit Singh Bains announced he will challenge his one-year prison sentence in a criminal defamation case. The Patiala chief judicial magistrate court convicted him on Monday, sentencing him to rigorous imprisonment and later granting bail to appeal. Bains, who accused aides of a former minister of operating an illicit network, called the verdict an assault on democracy and freedom of speech. He expressed faith in the higher judiciary, citing nearly eight years and 297 hearings in the case that dates back to 2018.

पूर्व एटम नगर MLA सिमरजीत सिंह बैंस ने ऐलान किया है कि वे मानहानि के एक आपराधिक मामले में अपनी एक साल की जेल की सज़ा को चुनौती देंगे। पटियाला की मुख्य न्यायिक मजिस्ट्रेट अदालत ने सोमवार को उन्हें दोषी ठहराया, उन्हें कठोर कारावास की सज़ा सुनाई और बाद में अपील के लिए ज़मानत दे दी। बैंस, जिन्होंने एक पूर्व मंत्री के सहयोगियों पर अवैध नेटवर्क चलाने का आरोप लगाया था, ने फैसले को लोकतंत्र और अभिव्यक्ति की स्वतंत्रता पर हमला बताया। उन्होंने उच्च न्यायपालिका में विश्वास जताया, जो 2018 से चले आ रहे इस मामले में लगभग आठ साल और 297 सुनवाईयों का हवाला देते हुए कहा।
