India's data centres could consume up to 2% of the nation's total electricity within the next decade, a significant rise from the current 0.5%, according to NITI Aayog Member Abhay Karandikar. This projection stems from the expansion of digital infrastructure and growing demand for AI and digital services. Karandikar stated that the government has a roadmap to meet this increased energy demand, potentially through renewable and nuclear sources. A new framework has also been released to evaluate data centre proposals, considering their electricity and water needs.

NITI Aayog
