The US military is experiencing a significant shortage of suitable working dogs, with over 80% currently sourced from Europe. A new Texas-based defense startup, Warhound, backed by Palmer Luckey and Ben Lamm, aims to solve this by using cloning and gene-editing technologies. The company plans to create healthier, more capable dogs and reduce reliance on European breeders. Warhound has secured $200 million in seed funding and expects to deliver its first genetically enhanced dogs within two years, addressing the challenge of acquiring and training enough animals for military service.
