Homes Repaired After Helene Now Face Demolition Via FEMA Buyouts

Times of India · environment

Two years after Hurricane Helene caused catastrophic flooding in western North Carolina, four homes in Hendersonville that were repaired by owners and volunteers are now slated for demolition. Homeowners accepted voluntary FEMA buyouts, despite the significant personal investment in rebuilding. The Hazard Mitigation Grant Program aims to reduce future flood risk by acquiring vulnerable properties. Once purchased, these homes will be demolished, and the land will be returned to green space to serve as public open areas and help manage floodwaters.
