Yamuna River Choked By Toxic Foam As Winter Intensifies Frothing
Hindustan Times · environment
Stretches of the Yamuna River near Kalindi Kunj are covered in thick, toxic white froth, a phenomenon intensified by falling winter temperatures and water churning at the Okhla barrage. This frothing is caused by surfactant molecules originating from untreated sewage, industrial pollutants, and decomposing water hyacinth. Activists state the situation reflects the river's extremely poor ecological state, which has worsened over the past decade. Authorities plan to spray chemical defoaming agents ahead of the Chhath festival, though experts view this as merely treating symptoms.
