The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) is allowing pension savings to be invested in private market debt and alternative investment funds, including private equity. Chairman S Ramann stated this aims to address the gap where foreign pension funds invest in lucrative Indian projects while domestic ones cannot. PFRDA has approved its first two private debt investments under this new framework. To increase accessibility, the regulator is also simplifying NPS account opening through UPI, enabling 'three-click' enrolment without onboarding charges.
