The Centre informed the Supreme Court that it is contemplating the formation of a committee to review the University Grants Commission's (UGC) equity rules designed to prevent caste discrimination. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta stated the government aims to address student concerns and ensure no section feels apprehensive or dissatisfied. These regulations, notified in 2026, were previously put on hold by the apex court due to concerns about their vagueness and potentially divisive societal impact. The court had directed the UGC's 2012 regulations to remain in force.
