Supreme Court Upholds Bombay HC Ruling on Yes Bank's AT1 Bond Write-off

Business Standard · stocks

The Supreme Court has upheld the Bombay High Court's decision to quash Yes Bank's ₹8,415-crore Additional Tier 1 (AT1) bond write-off from March 2020. The apex court dismissed appeals against the High Court's ruling, stating the bank's administrator lacked the authority to extinguish these investments. AT1 bonds are perpetual debt instruments used by banks to absorb losses during financial distress. The court found the write-off inconsistent with RBI guidelines and bond terms, declining to interfere with the High Court's judgment.
