The Allahabad High Court has suspended the conviction and sentence of Nandlal Rai, convicted in a 2017 murder case, to allow him to contest the 2027 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. The court cited the right to livelihood and the importance of allowing individuals to contest elections, referencing a Supreme Court judgment. Rai, an active BJP worker before his conviction, was found guilty by a Varanasi court in 2025. The bench noted his alleged involvement surfaced late and questioned the evidence. Rai will be released on bail pending his appeal.

इलाहाबाद हाई कोर्ट ने नंदलाल राय की 2017 के हत्या मामले में सज़ा और दोषसिद्धि पर रोक लगा दी है। ऐसा इसलिए किया गया है ताकि वे 2027 के उत्तर प्रदेश विधानसभा चुनाव लड़ सकें। कोर्ट ने आजीविका के अधिकार और चुनाव लड़ने की अनुमति देने के महत्व का हवाला दिया, साथ ही Supreme Court के एक फैसले का भी ज़िक्र किया। नंदलाल राय, जो दोषी ठहराए जाने से पहले एक सक्रिय BJP कार्यकर्ता थे, को 2025 में एक वाराणसी कोर्ट ने दोषी पाया था। बेंच ने कहा कि उनकी कथित संलिप्तता देर से सामने आई और सबूतों पर सवाल उठाए। अपनी अपील लंबित रहने तक राय को जमानत पर रिहा किया जाएगा।
