His remarks follow a report claiming Election Commissioners raised objections over decisions being made in the commission's name without their knowledge. The Election Commission has refuted these claims, stating that operational queries during the drafting stage are standard administrative processes. Tharoor believes it is better for a few ineligible people to vote than for millions of eligible citizens to be denied their right.

कांग्रेस सांसद शशि थरूर ने भारतीय नागरिकों के वोट देने के अधिकार को छीनने की साजिश रचने का आरोप लगाया है, इसे लोकतंत्र पर सीधा हमला बताया है। उनकी यह टिप्पणी एक रिपोर्ट के बाद आई है जिसमें दावा किया गया है कि चुनाव आयुक्तों ने आयोग के नाम पर उनकी जानकारी के बिना लिए जा रहे फैसलों पर आपत्ति जताई थी। चुनाव आयोग ने इन दावों का खंडन करते हुए कहा है कि मसौदा तैयार करने के चरण के दौरान परिचालन संबंधी प्रश्न पूछना मानक प्रशासनिक प्रक्रियाएं हैं। थरूर का मानना है कि कुछ अयोग्य लोगों को वोट देने दिया जाए, यह लाखों योग्य नागरिकों को उनके अधिकार से वंचित करने से बेहतर है।
