India's EV Boom Fuels Surge in Chinese Battery Imports

Times of India - Business · business

India's burgeoning electric vehicle sales are directly increasing battery imports from China, which now stands as the sixth largest import item. During April-August, battery imports nearly doubled to $2.9 billion, surpassing other key categories. This trend highlights India's dependence on China for critical EV components, as domestic manufacturers primarily assemble imported cells. Vehicle imports, particularly two- and three-wheelers, have also seen a significant rise, contributing to a widening trade deficit with China. This situation has prompted concerns from Indian ministers regarding the need for a fair trade balance.
