Mauritius has lifted a nighttime curfew imposed last week amid a rare wave of violent demonstrations. The government announced the decision on Monday, citing a favourable evolution of the situation. Protests initially began over water shortages and the rising cost of living but escalated after a police officer shot and wounded a woman. At least 188 people were arrested during the unrest. The island nation, usually a model of stability, saw its last major unrest in 1999.
