Animal Welfare Groups Question Transfer Of Five Elephants From Assam To Tamil Nadu
The Hindu · india
A coalition of 53 animal welfare organizations has urged the Tamil Nadu government to investigate the acquisition and records of five young elephants transferred from Assam to temples. The groups are seeking clarity on whether the elephants, including Durga, were gifted, purchased, or transferred, and have questioned the validity of their ownership certificates. They also noted that three certificates were issued long after the elephants' recorded birth dates. The organizations are calling for a pause on further transfers until these cases are resolved and have requested independent veterinary assessments.
