Old Census town criteria inadequate for India's urbanisation

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has informed a parliamentary committee that the four-decade-old criteria for defining Census Towns are inadequate to capture India's actual urbanisation. The Ministry argued that the rigid definition, which the Registrar General of India plans to continue, fails to account for economic and spatial transformations. The Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister suggests India's urbanisation could be as high as 63% based on satellite data.
