India Mandates Car Black Boxes To Aid Accident Investigations

India is set to implement new safety standards for vehicles, including the mandatory installation of Event Data Recorders (EDRs), often called car 'black boxes'. These devices will record crucial data like speed, braking, and airbag deployment in the moments leading up to an accident. This move aims to significantly aid accident investigation by providing objective information about vehicle behaviour. The new regulations also enhance safety for pedestrians and occupants during collisions and include provisions to prevent car theft. These changes will be phased in between October 2027 and 2032.
