The death toll from Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has now exceeded 5,000, according to government data. The current outbreak, declared in May, has infected over 10,000 people across eight of the DRC's 26 provinces. This epidemic is the second-largest ever recorded, surpassed only by the 2014-2016 West Africa outbreak. Delayed detection, ongoing conflict, and strained health services have contributed to the rapid spread of the virus, which has no approved treatments or vaccines for its specific strain.
