Duty-Free Cotton Imports Extended, Hurting Drought-Hit Farmers While Aiding Industry
Times of India · business
The Indian government's decision to extend duty-free cotton imports until December 31 has negatively impacted farmers in Maharashtra's drought-stricken Vidarbha region, while benefiting the textile industry. Cotton growers argue this extension, occurring during a period of reduced yields and returns due to drought, will cause domestic cotton prices to crash. Conversely, the textile industry sought cheaper imports to compensate for domestic production shortfalls. Local raw cotton rates have already fallen, with traders noting significantly lower arrivals compared to last year.
