Rabies is nearly always fatal once symptoms appear, making prevention crucial. Dogs cause almost 99% of human rabies cases, with India accounting for a third of global deaths. Immediate wound washing with soap and water for fifteen minutes can significantly reduce the viral load. Depending on bite severity, post-exposure prophylaxis, including rabies vaccine and immunoglobulin for severe wounds, is essential. Waiting to observe the dog's health is never safe, as infected animals can appear normal.

रेबीज के लक्षण दिखने के बाद लगभग हमेशा जानलेवा होता है, इसलिए बचाव बहुत ज़रूरी है। इंसानों में रेबीज के लगभग 99% मामले कुत्तों की वजह से होते हैं, और दुनिया भर में होने वाली मौतों में से एक तिहाई भारत में होती हैं। काटने वाली जगह को तुरंत साबुन और पानी से पंद्रह मिनट तक धोने से वायरल लोड काफी कम हो सकता है। काटने की गंभीरता के आधार पर, पोस्ट-एक्सपोजर प्रोफिलैक्सिस, जिसमें रेबीज वैक्सीन और गंभीर घावों के लिए इम्यूनोग्लोबुलिन शामिल है, ज़रूरी है। कुत्ते के स्वास्थ्य का इंतज़ार करना कभी भी सुरक्षित नहीं है, क्योंकि संक्रमित जानवर सामान्य दिख सकते हैं।
