El Niño Fuels Typhoons Batter East Asia, Pacific 'Burns With Fever'
BBC World · world
East Asia is experiencing an extraordinary wave of intense and unpredictable storms, exacerbated by the El Niño weather pattern. These typhoons have killed dozens, shut down airports, and destroyed crops and infrastructure across the Philippines, Taiwan, China, and Japan. One storm, Typhoon Champi, had winds of 295 km/h, equivalent to a category five hurricane. The current El Niño, forecast to be the strongest in memory, is expected to last until March, continuing to drive extreme weather events.
