Tamil Nadu Women Lead Funerals Challenging Patriarchal Traditions
Times of India · india
In Tamil Nadu, women from the Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam (DVK) are conducting funerals to challenge patriarchal traditions that exclude women from death rituals. Inspired by rationalist leader Periyar E V Ramasamy, the group aims to assert equal rights and dismantle caste-based superstitions. Over 300 members in Salem, with a presence in other districts, perform rites without religious rituals or superstitions. Despite facing societal opposition and family estrangement, these women find purpose in their work, advocating for gender equality in all aspects of life, including honouring the dead.
