Irregular Migration From Libya to Crete Surges, Fueling Smuggler-Militia-Europe Links

DW World · world

Irregular migration from eastern Libya to the Greek island of Crete has significantly increased this year, with nearly 20,000 people attempting the crossing. This route has become a major corridor into Europe, with hundreds arriving daily, often departing from Tobruk. Migrants reportedly pay up to $4,000 for the journey, which takes about a day and a half. The rise is partly due to crackdowns on other routes, forcing smugglers to adapt their methods and target Crete.
