Abandoned Mines Could Cool AI Data Centres

Scientists have discovered that abandoned mine pools can be repurposed to cool AI data centres. A study modelling the Morea mine in Pennsylvania found its pool could support 9.5 MW with air cooling and 30.6 MW with liquid cooling. Researchers assessed other abandoned mine lands in Pennsylvania for similar potential applications. The study developed a heat-transfer model to estimate cooling capacity, considering factors like surface area and water temperature.
