Unapproved HTBt Cotton Covers 30% of India's Area: Study

Hindustan Times · business

Unauthorised herbicide-tolerant Bt (HTBt) cotton was cultivated on 65-72 lakh acres during the 2025-26 kharif season, covering up to 30% of India's total cotton acreage, according to a new study. This adoption is driven by labour shortages and the high cost of manual weeding, with glyphosate use costing significantly less than manual methods. The study highlights that farmers are resorting to unapproved seeds due to a lack of regulatory approval for needed technology. This trend coincides with a decline in India's overall cotton production and productivity.
