Meghalaya Identifies Over 3.4 Lakh Hectares of Cultivable Wasteland

Hindustan Times · environment

A recent study utilizing satellite imagery and GIS technology has identified over 3.4 lakh hectares of cultivable wasteland in Meghalaya, representing 15.2% of the state's geographical area. The identified land, primarily sparse and dense scrubland, could be assessed for agricultural reclamation and sustainable land-use planning. Researchers from North-Eastern Hill University and NE Space Applications Centre conducted the study, which achieved 86% accuracy. While the findings offer a baseline for development, further assessment is needed to determine actual suitability for cultivation.
