Aravind Eye Care System, founded by Dr G Venkataswamy, has enabled one crore people to see. Initially aspiring to be an obstetrician, Dr V turned to ophthalmology after rheumatoid arthritis impacted his hands. He envisioned a standardized, accessible eye care model, inspired by community screening. Since 1976, Aravind has served nine crore outpatients and performed over 1.1 crore surgeries, with many procedures offered free or subsidised, fulfilling his mission to help the poor.
