FDA will now closely monitor the masala and spices industry for adulteration and misleading advertisements. A compliance order issued on Thursday covers manufacturers, traders, retailers, and e-commerce operators dealing with various spices. The FDA reiterates the prohibition of harmful colours and substances like metanil yellow and lead chromate, strictly banning ethylene oxide for sterilization due to its carcinogenic effects. Spices must not be dried in unhygienic conditions, and production premises must be clean and pest-free.
