Kerala Forest Dept Faces Dilemma Over Tree Felling Permissions

The Hindu · india

The Kerala Forest Department is in a quandary regarding permissions for felling trees on assigned forestland. The department had previously booked two individuals for cutting jackfruit, mango, and Pathiri trees in Idukki's Cardamom Hill Reserve. However, it later approached the court to withdraw proceedings, accepting the accused's claims that the trees were felled for house repairs and medical expenses. This incident gains significance as the department recently withdrew an order permitting tree felling on assigned lands following widespread criticism.
