Rethinking Delhi's Cultural Heritage Beyond Monuments

Hindustan Times · lifestyle

Delhi's cultural heritage is often narrowly defined by its physical monuments and imperial legacies, leading to historical amnesia. While intangible heritage like Sufi traditions and Mughlai food are acknowledged, the city's diverse cultural histories, shaped by post-independence migration and pre-existing villages, are often overlooked. Institutions like DDA and INTACH frameworks exist but tend to favour a conventional monumental approach. There is a need to recognise and conserve the cultural traditions of Delhi's villages, which possess distinctive heritage, alongside popular sites.
