Despite early challenges including poaching and deaths, a conservation program successfully reintroduced Przewalski's horses to Ukraine's Chernobyl exclusion zone starting in 1998. Initially, 31 horses were transferred, but significant losses occurred during transport and adaptation. By 2018, researchers using camera traps counted 137 horses in the Ukrainian part of the zone, with potential additional sightings in Belarus. The herd's demographic indicators show no negative trends, demonstrating a remarkable comeback in the area.
