Baya Weaver Nests Act As Fortresses Against Snake Predators

Hindustan Times · environment

Baya weaver birds construct remarkably strong nests that act as formidable defenses against predators like rat snakes. These nests feature intricate weaves, often with multiple entrances or very narrow openings, frustrating snakes attempting to reach eggs and nestlings. Additionally, weavers strategically place nests on thorny branches or those overhanging water bodies to deter snakes. The nests' resilience is so great that even farm machinery has failed to slice through them, showcasing the extraordinary engineering capabilities of these small birds.
