Prickly Acacia Tree Introduced For Shade Now Infests Over 6.6 Million Hectares In Australia
Hindustan Times · environment
Prickly acacia, initially introduced to Australia in the 1890s for shade and fodder, has become a significant invasive weed. It now infests over 6.6 million hectares across the country and is classified as a Weed of National Significance. Cattle play a major role in its spread by carrying seeds through their digestive tracts and on their bodies. The dense thickets reduce pasture production, hinder livestock management, increase soil erosion, and threaten native biodiversity, impacting farming and the environment in northern Australia.
