BBC Hindi · india
A new World Bank report indicates India has made substantial progress in reducing poverty based on economic and non-economic indicators over the past decade. Between 2011 and 2023, the proportion of the population living below the poverty line of $4.20 per day decreased from 57.7% to 16.1%, lifting an estimated 496 million people out of poverty. Multidimensional poverty also saw a significant decline. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman welcomed the findings, attributing the reduction to strong consumption growth, increased employment, and expanded social welfare schemes.
