Supreme Court to Set FSSAI Labelling Timeline

The Supreme Court has refused to accept the timeline proposed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) for implementing front-of-pack labelling (FoPL) on food products. Justices J B Pardiwala and K Vinod Chandran deemed the FSSAI's proposed four-month period for framing regulations and a 365-day voluntary implementation period unreasonable. The court emphasized that the implementation is in the national interest and should not be delayed, questioning the regulator's prolonged process since 2022. The bench will now fix the timeline itself, expecting scrupulous compliance.

सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने खाद्य उत्पादों पर फ्रंट-ऑफ-पैक लेबलिंग (FoPL) लागू करने के लिए भारतीय खाद्य सुरक्षा और मानक प्राधिकरण (FSSAI) द्वारा प्रस्तावित समय-सीमा को स्वीकार करने से इनकार कर दिया है। जस्टिस जे बी पारदीवाला और के विनोद चंद्रन ने नियमों को तैयार करने के लिए FSSAI द्वारा प्रस्तावित चार महीने की अवधि और 365-दिन की स्वैच्छिक कार्यान्वयन अवधि को अनुचित माना। अदालत ने इस बात पर जोर दिया कि कार्यान्वयन राष्ट्रीय हित में है और इसमें देरी नहीं होनी चाहिए, और 2022 से नियामक की लंबी प्रक्रिया पर सवाल उठाया। अब बेंच खुद समय-सीमा तय करेगी, और पूरी तरह से अनुपालन की उम्मीद करती है।
