Elephants Show Cognitive Flexibility in Thailand Study

A new study in Thailand revealed that Asian elephants possess significant cognitive flexibility. Researchers observed 16 elephants successfully adapting their strategies to retrieve fruit from an opaque box by reaching around it. When the box was made transparent with holes, they continued to use the indirect approach. Further tests showed elephants could adjust to a rotated box opening, demonstrating inhibitory control. However, older elephants took longer to adapt, suggesting age may impact the ability to suppress old habits and switch to new solutions.
