Scientists long believed the extinct Miracinonyx trumani was the "American cheetah" due to its speed-adapted physique. However, new genetic research using ancient DNA from fossils reveals it was actually a close relative of the modern puma. The two lineages diverged approximately 2.6 million years ago. This discovery indicates the cheetah-like appearance was a result of convergent evolution, not shared ancestry. The study also suggests some populations consumed fish in the Arctic.
