Fide Approves Official Rating System For Chess960 Variant

Hindustan Times · sports

Fide, the global chess governing body, has approved the establishment of an official rating system for Chess960, also known as Fischer Random. This variant randomizes the back-rank piece arrangement, creating up to 960 distinct starting positions. The move acknowledges the growing popularity of Chess960 and aims to integrate it further into the chess ecosystem. Champion Magnus Carlsen believes the format encourages adaptability and creativity over rote memorization of opening theory. Bobby Fischer originally advocated for the variant in the 1990s, believing traditional chess was becoming stagnant.
