Amazon is constructing a 22-hectare data centre in Thane, part of a $21 billion investment in India's AI infrastructure by 2030. The project, described as roughly the size of 41 football fields, faces significant local opposition. Residents are concerned about noise, increased electricity consumption, and water stress, with over 1,000 locals claiming they were not consulted. Amazon states the facility will use water-free cooling and have a dedicated power supply, while also claiming to have planted more trees than removed. Similar concerns have been raised globally regarding data centre impacts.
