Antarctica's 'Doomsday Glacier' Melting Faster Than Previously Thought

Al Jazeera · world

New research indicates the Thwaites glacier in West Antarctica is melting significantly faster than anticipated, potentially contributing twice as much to global sea levels over the next century. Warm seawater is seeping underneath the glacier, melting its core and causing rapid mass loss. This "Doomsday Glacier," roughly the size of Senegal, already accounts for four percent of global sea-level rise. Its collapse could have catastrophic consequences for coastal cities worldwide, although this is not projected for centuries.
