Isle Royale Wolf Restoration Project Successfully Establishes Self-Sustaining Population

A five-year assessment of Isle Royale's wolf restoration project, which began in 2018, has confirmed its success in establishing a self-sustaining wolf population. Researchers moved 19 wolves from Minnesota, Michigan, and Ontario between September 2018 and September 2019. By April 2023, the minimum wolf count had risen to 27, exceeding the 50-year average in three of the five years. The wolves bred annually, with at least 10 litters and 29 pups born. This scientific effort aimed to rebuild a viable population for the national park.
