Supreme Court Seeks Practical Firecracker Regulation Amid Pollution Concerns
Hindustan Times · environment
The Supreme Court is seeking a pragmatic approach to regulating firecrackers, acknowledging religious sentiments while addressing pollution. The bench noted that enforcing strict two-hour bursting limits is difficult for police. Last year, despite court permission for green crackers, conventional ones were sold openly, and pollution levels in Delhi reached their worst since 2021. The court emphasized the need for effective enforcement at the supply chain level, from factories to shops, before sale, rather than relying on individual household compliance. The Commission for Air Quality Management's report on enforceability is awaited.
