Critically Endangered Regent Honeyeaters Learn Traditional Song Through Live Tutoring
Times of India · science
Australian researchers have successfully taught critically endangered regent honeyeaters their traditional song, which had vanished from the wild due to population decline. Experiments conducted over three breeding seasons at Taronga Zoo and Taronga Western Plains Zoo found that live tutoring in small groups was the most effective method. By the study's end, 42% of captive-bred male regent honeyeaters learned songs indistinguishable from the traditional wild song. This conservation effort is vital as the wild population, estimated at fewer than 250, struggles with habitat loss and song culture disruption.
