The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation is discussing the creation of a Rs 25,000-crore Interest Stabilisation Reserve. This fund aims to protect the annual interest payouts for its nearly 30 crore members from market volatility and corporate bond defaults. A proposal from IIM Kozhikode suggests building this reserve progressively from surplus ETF capital gains and excess interest income. The reserve would be invested in liquid government securities for safety and liquidity, ensuring stable interest rates for subscribers even during economic downturns or credit events.
