Marathon Runners Risk Low Blood Sodium From Excessive Water Intake: Doctor Warns
Hindustan Times · health
Drinking excessive water during marathons can lead to exercise-associated hyponatremia (EAH), a condition where blood sodium levels decrease significantly. This occurs because the body retains excess water due to the hormone arginine vasopressin, diluting blood sodium. Symptoms can include nausea, headache, dizziness, and fatigue, potentially mimicking dehydration. A 2005 study found 13% of Boston Marathon runners experienced EAH. Doctors advise runners to maintain hydration balance and be aware of EAH symptoms, as mistaking it for dehydration and giving more fluids can worsen the condition.
